Three members of Fountain Court (instructed by Stephen Brown of Jones Day) are currently acting pro bono in the claim of Song Mao (and others) v (1) Tate & Lyle Sugar Industries; and (2) T & L Sugars Limited, a commercial court claim brought on behalf of 200 Cambodian villagers whom (it is alleged) were illegally and forcibly evicted from their land by the Cambodian Government. In summary, it is claimed that Tate & Lyle (and/or a subsidiary company) then purchased the sugar from sugar cane subsequently grown upon the villagers’ land and are therefore liable to the Villagers for the tort of conversion. The Claim has attracted significant attention in the national press.
