“It is rare to come across a set where the quality of the barristers is matched by the quality of the clerks, but that is absolutely the case at Fountain Court.”
The Legal 500
We operate a team system in which members of chambers are divided by seniority and are typically looked after by a Team Leader and Team Leader’s Assistant. This means that our clerks have extensive knowledge of the skillset and expertise of the barristers within their team, and their needs and requirements in terms of practice development.
Our clerks are widely recognised as some of the best in the industry for various reasons – their commercial approach, their responsiveness, their approachability and their excellent client service being some examples. Read more about the recognition of our clerks here.
Our junior clerks provide first-rate support to our barristers, our clerking team and other team members. They are responsible for tasks such as taking barristers and papers to court, and other administrative duties.
They pride themselves on their organisation, dedication and ability to quickly respond to urgent requests.
The role of a junior clerk can be a foundation to an exciting career in clerking which may suit college leavers or those with first-job experience.
Our experienced marketing and business development team is responsible for all marketing, client and business development activities, working closely with our clerking team.
They oversee activities ranging from the management of our social media presence and digital marketing strategies to our business development strategies for specific practice areas and regions and our client development initiatives.
The roles performed within our highly-respected administration or ‘business support’ team include fee management, insurance, IT services, HR, equality and diversity, recruitment, maintenance of our historic buildings, reception, catering, security and procurement.
Our experienced team provides a smooth and efficient service meaning that clients and barristers can enjoy access to first class facilities.
As a leading set we believe in providing the best possible quality of service all round.
We invest in training and support for our teams, including in relation to technical skills and wellbeing. We want our people to perform as well as possible and to develop in their careers.
Progression within any set of chambers can be challenging for staff members. The teams are inevitably small and leanly run, meaning opportunities for promotion or new roles internally can be limited.
However, we are proud that we have been able to retain, develop and often promote members of our team in recognition of their hard work and effectiveness.
Our staff working area was refurbished in 2021, with employee wellbeing as a key motivator. The new space, named ‘HQ’, was designed in collaboration with our clerks and business support teams, in order to provide an environment that our staff are excited about working from.
The layout is open plan, intended to encourage and enhance collaboration across teams. Individuals have the flexibility to hot desk between a variety of workstations, many of which include ergonomically designed standing desks, and have access to “break out” space within HQ if needed.
We are recruiting for an IT Systems Engineer to join our expanding team. The role is well suited to someone looking for the next step in their career and will provide lots of opportunities to learn and progress.
Please click here for further information on the role and how to apply. Applications should be received by midday on Wednesday 6 July 2022.
Fountain Court is an Equal Opportunities employer and welcomes applications from under-represented groups.
As part of our ongoing efforts to encourage those from non-traditional backgrounds to consider a career at the Bar, we offer work experience opportunities to year 10, year 11 and sixth form or college students. Students will have the opportunity to try out a range of roles within administration, business development, clerking, finance, IT and marketing. Candidates do not need to know anything about the law or barristers’ chambers and will be given the opportunity to learn about life at the Bar.
Generally, we accept placements in July, October and November. For further details, including how to apply, please view our flyer here.
