Gillian joined Chambers in October 2019 following successful completion of her pupillage. She is developing a broad commercial practice in line with Chambers’ profile.

From October 2019 to December 2019, Gillian was a Judicial Assistant at the Commercial Court. In that role, she assisted in a number of trials and hearings, including applications relating to jurisdiction, arbitration and injunctive relief.

During her pupillage, Gillian assisted members of Chambers in a broad range of matters, including the following:

Commercial Dispute Resolution

  • eMagine films v Mister Smith (Ch Div Bus List). Defending a claim for breach of contract arising out of a film finance dispute
  • Advising an investment fund management company on defending claims for bribery, dishonest assistance and undue influence
  • A claim to enforce the cross undertaking to pay damages in an injunction

Banking & Finance

  • Defending a bank from claims to enforce loan agreements entered into as part of a loan recycling scheme (in LCIA arbitration)
  • An application for an injunction, under the Arbitration Act 1996, to restrain a beneficiary from making a demand on a performance bond
  • Defending a bank from claims for misrepresentation brought under sections 56 and 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974
  • An application for summary judgment in a claim to enforce a contract of guarantee and indemnity
  • Advising the Financial Services Compensation Scheme in relation to the interpretation of the compensation rules

Civil Fraud

  • A claim in deceit by an investor against an investment advisory company

Professional Negligence & Professional Discipline

  • SRA disciplinary proceedings against a solicitor concerning allegations of dishonest breaches of the SRA Principles 2011


  • Acted as sole counsel in the County Court for an airline defending claims under Regulation 261/2004

Private International Law

Gillian was a Judicial Assistant to Jacobs J during the hearing in Etihad Airways PJSC v Prof Dr Lucas Flöther [2019] EWHC 3107 (Comm), a jurisdiction challenge which considered the proper approach to interpreting jurisdiction agreements under English and EU Law and the applicability of Article 31(2) of Brussels Recast to asymmetric jurisdiction clauses.


Gillian was a Judicial Assistant to Butcher J during the hearing in The Republic of Korea v Mohammad Reza Dayyani & others [2019] EWHC 3580 (Comm), a s. 67 application to set aside an arbitral award of claims brought pursuant to the Korea-Iran Bilateral Investment Treaty.
