Paul Martenstyn

Team Leader

Paul Martenstyn joined Fountain Court as a Team Leader in December 2008, having started his clerking career in 1997, focusing primarily on commercial and insurance work – key practice areas at Fountain Court.  Prior to joining Fountain Court, Paul held the position of First Junior Clerk in a leading set, deputising for his then Senior Clerk.

Paul’s role as Team Leader gives him responsibility for tasks such as liaising with instructing solicitors, fee negotiation and assessment, effective diary management, allocation of instructions and briefs, devising and assisting with barristers' focused practice development plans and managing more junior members of the clerking team.  He is responsible, with his assistant Reiss Nott, for a team of barristers of varying degrees of seniority, from leading silks to the most junior members of chambers.

In early 2007 Paul was the first barristers’ clerk to be awarded a professional qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, as a result of which he received an award from the prestigious Marketer Magazine in October 2007, again the first clerk to do so.  As a result of a groundbreaking presentation at the Bar Council in April 2008 on the role of a modern clerk, given to delegates attending from nationwide, a number of clerks have followed in Paul's footsteps to gain the CIM qualification, including two members of the Fountain Court clerking team.  Paul has assumed a leadership and mentoring role in the Bar's approach to legal services marketing and is acknowledged as a leader in this field.  In 2011, Paul's 1500 word article "The modern clerk in a modern bar" was published in Counsel magazine, the pre-eminent periodical for barristers.

Paul represents the clerking team on Fountain Court's marketing committee and played a key role drafting chambers' marketing/business plan.  In 2011 he also played a significant role in launching the Russian/CIS Arbitration Network (RCAN) and sits on its executive committee alongside lawyers from around the globe.  Paul was also recently invited to be part of the founding group behind the Young Public Lawyers Group (YPLG).

Uniquely for a non-Senior Clerk, Paul has been the subject of market comments in the legal directories, including: "The set’s revitalised clerksroom ‘operates particularly well, providing a very reliable service‘, and saw the ‘highly commercial’ Paul Martenstyn supplement Alex Taylor’s hard work."

Outside of work, Paul’s interests include most sports, especially tennis and golf.  He also enjoys spending time travelling and enjoys listening to music.
